Yesterday, May 21, 2026, 274 people reached the summit from the southern side of Everest — a new record for one day, climbing organizations report. Favorable weather allowed such a number of athletes to ascend simultaneously.

Yesterday, a record number of climbers ascended Everest from the Nepalese side. According to the climbing organization, 274 people reached the summit, reports NOS.

The fact that so many climbers gathered in one day is explained by favorable weather, states the Nepal Association of Tour Operators, which organizes mountain expeditions in Nepal.

According to the organization, this number may still increase, as several climbers who reached the summit have yet to report their ascent to the southern base camp. This is the starting and finishing point for climbers, located at an altitude of over 5,300 meters.

Climber Certificate

The Ministry of Tourism of Nepal cannot yet confirm this figure. However, the ministry states that it is aware that more than 250 climbers have ascended the highest peak in the world.

"We are waiting for the return of the climbers who will provide us with videos and other evidence of their ascent in order to issue them certificates. Only after that can we confirm the number of ascents," the ministry's statement said.

This year, the government of Nepal issued 494 permits, each costing around $15,000 (nearly €13,000).

World Record

The summit of Everest, which stands at 8,849 meters, can be reached from both the southern (Nepal) and northern (China) sides. Ascents from the Chinese side have not taken place, as China did not issue any permits this year.

The previous record dates back to 2019. At that time, according to the climbing organization, on May 22, there were 223 ascents on the Nepalese side. The day after, the record on the mountain was broken again. According to the Guinness World Records, 354 climbers reached the summit from both sides at that time.

Despite the measures taken, the number of climbers has increased.

In the past, the government of Nepal took steps to reduce the number of climbers due to overcrowding on the mountain. According to the government, emergency services were under immense strain as inexperienced climbers got into trouble, and the crowding led to an increase in litter on the mountain.

The new Everest record highlights the growing interest in extreme summits and shows that with proper preparation and weather conditions, even the boldest ambitions become achievable.
