Is it safe to leave your phone plugged in overnight? Experts warn of the risks

Experts explained whether leaving a phone plugged in can harm it and poses a danger.

We explain whether it is truly safe or if the charger should be unplugged from the outlet.

Previously, we discussed why a regular charger can destroy a home.

According to electrician and founder of Grounded Electric Barrett Abramov, if you leave your phone plugged in after it has fully charged, once or twice — there will be no negative consequences. However, if the device is left plugged in constantly, it can lead to problems, reports Better Homes & Gardens.

If the phone's quality is low or there are sharp voltage fluctuations (for example, during a power outage), a short circuit and even a fire can occur while the phone is plugged in. Voltage spikes also lead to faster battery wear.

Moreover, even if the charger is not connected to the phone or another gadget, the device plugged into the outlet still consumes a certain amount of electricity. If there is only one such device, nothing serious will happen. However, if there are several, it can increase the amounts on the bills.

Considering all this, the expert advises unplugging chargers from the outlet as soon as they are done charging, as well as choosing energy-efficient chargers.

How to safely charge your smartphone?

Experts recommend following a few simple rules:

  • do not use damaged cables and cheap chargers;

  • do not leave the phone under a pillow or on soft surfaces while charging;

  • if possible, unplug the device after it is fully charged;

  • use power strips during unstable voltage;

  • do not overheat the smartphone while charging.

In the editorial's opinion, modern smartphones have indeed become much safer, but it is still important not to completely ignore charging rules. Simple habits — unplugging the charger from the outlet and using quality adapters — will help extend the device's lifespan and reduce the risk of unpleasant situations.
