Beneath layers of silt and seawater, metal detectors revealed the true scale of the ancient shipwreck: much of its priceless cargo, which lay for two thousand years, still awaits its moment.
From the depths of the sea, off the shores of the remote Greek island of Antikythera, more than fifty new artifacts have been raised. These stunning finds, both luxury items and everyday objects, have lain on the seabed for over two millennia, preserved in perfect condition. This famous sunken ship, dated to around 2050 years ago, has captivated archaeologists for decades. It is rightly considered one of the richest underwater archaeological sites ever explored, astonishing with its scale and incredible variety of cargo.
Incredible Abundance of Finds
Divers, having invested about forty hours of intense work on the seabed, actively used specialized excavation equipment. Metal detectors, like magic wands, revealed countless buried items across the perimeter of the shipwreck. This confirmed that a lion's share of its precious cargo still lies hidden beneath layers of silt.
Archaeologists enthusiastically noted that detailed surveys using metal detectors showed that artifacts are scattered over an impressive area of 40 by 50 meters. This eloquently attests to the enormous size of the ancient vessel, which tragically met its end against the sheer cliffs of Antikythera. Marine archaeologist Theotokis Theodoulou from the Underwater Antiquities Service of the Greek Ministry of Culture and Sports proudly stated, "We are very fortunate to discover many finds in their natural context, which allows us to fully utilize all the archaeological information they provide."
What Was Hidden in the Depths?
Among the remarkable discoveries is an elegant bronze armrest that may have once adorned a throne. Nearby, smaller yet equally valuable items were found: ancient nails, a fragment of pottery, and a fragile bronze mass lying next to a mysterious blue bead. All these details complement the overall, captivating picture of ancient life and luxury.
Archaeologists also retrieved fragments of mosaic glass, delicate transparent glass vessels, and a beautifully decorated lagynos, which served as a pitcher. According to Theodoulou, the fact that all these items were found in their original form is invaluable for understanding their use. Some finds seem particularly personal, as if whispering the stories of their owners: parts of a bone flute or a game piece from a board game. Among other treasures are a stone base of a figurine and various ceramics, each holding a piece of the past.
Mysteries of Origin and Daily Life
As part of a thorough investigation, fifteen lead artifacts, including a massive rescue ring and parts of anchors, were raised for isotopic analysis. Scientists hope this will help accurately determine the source of the lead and possibly establish the route and home port of the sunken ship. Simultaneously, DNA samples were taken from wooden elements of the ship's hull and from ceramic vessels.
Sediment samples were also collected to study starch grains and phytoliths. These seemingly insignificant details hold immense potential. They may reveal not only what the ship was carrying but also shed light on aspects of the ancient diet of the passengers and crew.
