Donald Trump, known for his sharp tongue, has once again sparked a wave of discussion by sarcastically commenting on French President Emmanuel Macron's relationship with his wife Brigitte. The French leader, in turn, did not leave the joke unaddressed.
Donald Trump, the former President of the United States, did not miss the opportunity to ironically comment on the personal relationship of French leader Emmanuel Macron and his wife Brigitte. The American politician suggested with a smirk that Macron is allegedly still recovering from the ‘slap’ he received from his wife, adding that she treats him ‘badly.’
“Then I called Macron in France, whose wife treats him extremely poorly. He is still recovering from a blow to the jaw,” Donald Trump said during a meeting at the White House. This sharp remark about the French leader came during a discussion at the White House regarding Washington's interaction with NATO amid tensions surrounding Iran. Emmanuel Macron himself did not delay in responding to his American colleague's words, publicly urging him to ‘talk less’ and ‘act more.’
“It’s not worth talking every day; we just need to act, reduce tension, and build a lasting peace,” Macron said.
The Incident: The ‘Famous Slap’
The ‘famous slap,’ which became the subject of much gossip, was delivered to Emmanuel Macron by Brigitte during the ceremonial meeting of the French delegation's plane at Hanoi airport in 2025. At the moment the aircraft door opened, ubiquitous journalists managed to capture the 72-year-old Brigitte slapping her husband, who was standing in the doorway. Later, as she descended the stairs, the First Lady of France demonstratively ignored her husband’s outstretched hand. Subsequently, while speaking to the press, Emmanuel Macron tried to smooth over the situation by stating that he and Brigitte were ‘just fooling around.’

Unrelenting Rumors and Trump’s Old Jokes
After that unfortunate incident, the French president has repeatedly become the target of mockery and speculation from the public. For example, when Macron appeared at a meeting with representatives of the country’s armed forces with a noticeably injured eye, rumors immediately spread online linking this to Brigitte. Interestingly, Donald Trump has not shied away from this sensitive topic before, once advising the Macron couple to ‘keep the door closed,’ hinting at their personal relationship.
Personal Life and Conspiracy Theories
It is worth reminding that Emmanuel Macron and his former French language teacher Brigitte Trogneux, whom he has loved since his school days, have been married since 2007. Brigitte is 24 years older than her husband. The couple has no children together, but Brigitte has three children from her first marriage and seven grandchildren. Persistent rumors have long circulated online that the First Lady of France was allegedly born a man. Emmanuel Macron has repeatedly and firmly denied these theories, publicly condemning the media for spreading slander about his wife.
