Exercise and an additional 11 minutes of sleep reduce the risk of heart problems.
Small lifestyle changes can significantly reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases. This conclusion was reached by scientists who analyzed data from more than 53,000 people from the UK Biobank. The results were published in the European Journal of Preventive Cardiology (EJPC).
The study lasted about eight years. Participants wore devices to assess sleep and physical activity, and also reported on their diet. Researchers compared this data with the risk of heart attack, stroke, and heart failure.
It turned out that even minimal changes have an effect. An additional 11 minutes of sleep, a few minutes of physical activity per day, and a slight increase in vegetable consumption were associated with a 10 percent reduction in risk.
The most pronounced results were observed when factors were combined. Sleeping for 8-9 hours, regular physical activity, and better nutrition were associated with a 57 percent reduction in the risk of serious events compared to the least healthy lifestyle.
The authors note that the study does not prove a direct cause-and-effect relationship. However, the results show that even small changes in habits can significantly impact heart and vascular health.
