Robin Gunningham best fits the description and biography of the artist.
For many years, the true name of the famous artist Banksy remained a mystery. Now, his identity has likely been uncovered.
According to Reuters, an investigation has revealed that the artist behind the pseudonym Banksy may be Bristol artist Robin Gunningham. Journalists report that he is a native of Bristol, UK, where his career began in the 1990s.
The agency analyzed archival materials, old interviews, public documents, and testimonies from people who knew the artist. They believe that Gunningham best fits the description and biography of the artist.
It is noted that Gunningham changed his name to David Jones at one point, likely due to attempts by British media to uncover his identity.
The agency reminded that Banksy became famous for his works on the walls of buildings, bridges, or other urban surfaces. Many of these have political or social undertones. For many years, Banksy worked anonymously, and his works were sold at auctions for millions of dollars.
Journalists also added that at the end of 2022, an ambulance arrived at a destroyed house in the village of Horenka in the Kyiv region, from which three men emerged. They applied stencils and began painting with spray cans, after which the famous graffiti of a bearded man in a bathtub appeared. It turned out to be one of Banksy's works.
This was not the only work by the artist in Ukraine. He personally confirmed that he is the author of seven pieces of graffiti in Kyiv, Irpin, Horenka, and Borodyanka.
