Microbiologist Freestone: due to fabric softener, towels absorb moisture worse.

Primrose Freestone, an associate professor at the University of Leicester (UK), named a common mistake when washing towels. Her words are quoted by the Daily Mirror.

The microbiologist explained that fabric softener accumulates in the fabric and prevents detergents from penetrating during subsequent washes. According to her, this is particularly noticeable when washing towels. Due to the abundance of fabric softener, they gradually become less clean and do not absorb moisture.

The expert clarified that the effect of fabric softener is primarily provided by silicones and ammonium compounds. Initially, they give the fabric a pleasant texture, but over time they are absorbed into the fibers and produce the opposite effect.

To avoid this, Freestone advised washing towels without any fabric softener during the first wash. Subsequently, she recommended adding about one-third less detergent than usual.
