A Simple Way to Protect Against Fatty Liver Disease Discovered

Regular intake of fish oil reduces the risk of developing fatty liver disease.

Regular intake of fish oil has been associated with a lower risk of developing severe non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. This conclusion was reached by researchers who analyzed data from nearly 489,000 participants in the UK Biobank. The results of the study were published in the journal Food & Function (F&F).

Scientists monitored the health of participants for an average of over 12 years. During this time, severe fatty liver disease developed in 5,671 individuals. The analysis showed that among those taking fish oil supplements — the main source of omega-3 fatty acids — the risk of severe liver damage was approximately 7 percent lower than in those who did not use such supplements.

Further analysis indicated that the protective effect is partially explained by reduced inflammation and improved metabolism. In particular, this involved lower levels of C-reactive protein (a marker of inflammation), higher levels of 'good' HDL cholesterol, and kidney function indicators. Genetic differences related to omega-3 fatty acid metabolism did not significantly affect the outcome.

The authors emphasize that the data support the use of omega-3 supplements as one of the potential tools for preventing severe fatty liver disease, especially considering its widespread prevalence. However, since the study is observational in nature, the scientists urge considering fish oil as a complement to a healthy lifestyle rather than a universal protective remedy.
