Impotence in men is a clear sign of a possible heart attack and even death, scientists believe. People already suffering from vascular and heart diseases are at risk.

According to a study involving 1,519 adult men from 13 different countries suffering from cardiovascular diseases, those who are unable to engage in sexual activity fall into a high-risk group for heart attack and death.

Based on these findings, scientists from the University of Saar, who published their results in the journal Circulation, advise men with erectile dysfunction to undergo screening for cardiovascular diseases.

Experts say that impotence is linked to poor arterial function in the male genitalia. These arteries are much smaller than the coronary arteries; however, the absence of an erection is a clear signal that something is wrong with the blood vessels.

According to Richard Hobbs, a professor at the University of Birmingham, scientists have previously known about the connection between impotence and cardiovascular diseases, but the results of the latest study emphasize the importance of men with intimate disorders paying closer attention to their health.
