Reducing salt content in familiar products lowers heart risks.

A small reduction in salt content in everyday products — bread, ready meals, and takeout food — can significantly improve cardiovascular health. This conclusion was reached by scientists who assessed the consequences of sodium reduction programs in mass catering. The results were published in the journal Hypertension (HTN).

Modeling showed that even minimal changes in the recipes of popular products can lower the average blood pressure level in the population. At the same time, people do not need to change their eating habits or consciously limit salt — the effect is achieved automatically, due to the composition of the food itself.

Over time, such "invisible" measures could prevent a large number of heart attacks and strokes and reduce mortality from cardiovascular diseases. Although the benefit for each individual may seem moderate, at the level of millions of people, it becomes significant for public health.

The authors note that gradually reducing salt in industrially prepared products is one of the most effective and realistic ways to lessen the burden on the healthcare system and reduce the prevalence of heart diseases without putting pressure on consumers.
