Neurologist: hand coordination and motor skills are not related to dementia.
Neurologist Chris Winter evaluated popular hand coordination and motor skills exercises circulating on social media, which, according to the video creators, help in preventing dementia. The expert's words are reported by HuffPost.
Winter stated that the exercises suggested on social media are quite challenging, and many of them cannot always be repeated successfully on the first attempt. However, this does not mean that a person necessarily has brain function impairments, the neurologist assured.
"There is nothing harmful about these movements; they are even beneficial, just like any exercises for hand motor skills. But it would be an exaggeration to say that they can stop dementia," the doctor added.
The neurologist identified learning foreign languages or playing musical instruments as more effective methods for prevention. He explained that such tasks train the overall functionality of the brain, requiring concentration, attention, and simultaneous coordination of hands and eyes. Winter clarified that this method also does not guarantee protection against dementia, but it may help delay the onset of clear symptoms.
Additionally, the doctor noted that a comprehensive approach is best for dementia prevention: leading an active lifestyle, eating properly, quitting bad habits, and managing chronic diseases.
