COVID-19 and the Brain: How the Virus Can Accelerate Aging by 20 Years

Scientists have found that the COVID-19 virus can reduce the "youth" of the human brain by up to 20 years. Some consequences of the infection resemble those of a serious traumatic brain injury.

"Brain Fog" — One of the First Signs

From the very beginning of the pandemic, doctors have noted a phenomenon called "brain fog": fatigue, memory impairment, and decreased concentration. A 2022 study showed that 46% of those who recovered from COVID-19 experienced such symptoms.

How the Study Was Conducted

A team of scientists from the University of Liverpool, led by the director of the Laboratory of Infectious Neurobiology, Benedict Michael, studied patients who had contracted the coronavirus a year ago. Participants underwent cognitive tests, provided blood samples, and had brain MRIs.

Results

The researchers found a reduction in the volumes of certain brain areas responsible for attention. The set of biomarkers indicated changes similar to those seen in traumatic brain injury. After COVID-19, the brain had "aged" by approximately 20 years, according to the scientific journal Medscape.

Possible Consequences

At this time, it is unknown whether the effects of "brain fog" are permanent or if they can be reversed. Neuropsychologist Carla L. Johnson emphasizes that the main finding of the study is the confirmation of the reality of the symptom and that patients' complaints are not fictional. Many have faced difficulties in trying to convince doctors of the existence of physical manifestations that are hard to describe in words.
