After a five-year break due to extensive renovations, the Palm House of the University of Latvia Botanical Garden has reopened to visitors. This historic greenhouse is considered one of the most recognizable buildings in the garden and has its history dating back to the early 20th century.

Throughout its existence, the Palm House has been expanded and modernized multiple times to accommodate the ever-growing collection of plants. The building acquired its modern appearance in 1972, when its height reached 24 meters.

Modern Technologies for Rare Plants

During the renovation, a complete technical modernization of the structure was carried out. Specialists updated the load-bearing structures and facade glazing, as well as installed new heating, ventilation, lighting, and air exchange systems.

All engineering solutions are now integrated into an automated climate control system, which helps maintain optimal conditions for the plants and ensures visitor comfort. Additionally, the updated building has become more energy-efficient and environmentally friendly.

Over 200 Plant Species

Today, the Palm House houses the main part of the subtropical collection of the Botanical Garden. It features over 200 plant species, among which 25 species and varieties of palms hold a special place. The greenhouse collects plants from subtropical regions of different continents, including rare specimens and species that are endangered.

Year-Round Blooming

Visitors can see many exotic plants that regularly delight with their blooms. Among them are the royal bird of paradise, Nicholas's bird of paradise, Brunfelsia, and other representatives of tropical flora.

The Palm House is open for visitors daily from 10:00 AM to 8:00 PM.

...The reopening of the updated Palm House has become an important event not only for the University of Latvia Botanical Garden but also for all nature lovers. The modern renovation has allowed for the preservation of the historic building while simultaneously creating conditions for the further development of a unique collection of plants from around the world.
