On June 4, one of the most outstanding theater directors of our time, Thomas Ostermeier, artistic director of the Berlin theater Schaubühne, will arrive in Riga for the first time.
For over twenty years, Ostermeier has headed one of the most prestigious dramatic theaters in Europe and the world. His productions regularly participate in major international festivals and tour worldwide, and in 2011, the director was awarded the "Golden Lion" at the Venice Biennale for his contribution to the development of theatrical art.
The director's arrival coincides with the first-ever tour of the Berlin theater Schaubühne in Riga. On June 5 and 6, the Latvian National Theater will host the performance "The History of Violence" based on the novel of the same name by French writer Édouard Louis. The production has become one of the most notable works in the theater's repertoire in recent years and has been presented in many countries across Europe, North and South America.
However, the Riga visit will not be limited to performances. At the invitation of Wintour Group, the tour's organizing company, Thomas Ostermeier will participate in a large educational program specially prepared for the Latvian audience.
As part of his visit, the director will conduct an open lesson for students of the directing department at the Latvian Academy of Culture, where he will share his experiences working on productions, discuss methods of interaction with actors, and approaches to contemporary directing.
On the evening of June 4, the Zuzeum Museum invites everyone to an open artist talk with Thomas Ostermeier. The conversation will be led by theater critic and researcher Zane Radzobe. The discussion will focus on contemporary theater, its role in society, the creative principles of Schaubühne, and the challenges facing the European stage today.
For the theater community in Latvia, the opportunity for personal communication with the director is particularly valuable. The open meeting at Zuzeum will be a rare chance to hear Thomas Ostermeier outside the theater stage, learn more about his working methods, and ask questions to one of the most influential figures in contemporary world directing. The meeting with Thomas Ostermeier will take place on June 4 at the Zuzeum Museum, starting at 19:00. Admission is free with prior registration at www.zuzeum.com.
The next day, on June 5, the Latvian National Theater will begin the tour of the Berlin theater Schaubühne with the performance "The History of Violence."
Attention: "The History of Violence" is performed in German with Latvian and English subtitles. The performance contains explicit scenes and elements of nudity. Children under 18 are not allowed in the hall even in the presence of parents.
