On May 16, Latvia will host the Night of Churches and Open Door Day in Churches for the 13th time — a spiritual and cultural event uniting Christian churches across the country. Residents and guests are invited to discover churches in a new way — as places not only of prayer but also of art, music, communication, and inner peace.

On this day, most churches will be open to visitors until midnight, and some even longer. The organizers invite everyone to feel like a welcome guest: to listen to concerts, get acquainted with the architecture of the churches, visit exhibitions, participate in discussions, or simply enjoy the silence.

This year's event is themed around the words of the Apostle Paul: "May God give you peace everywhere and in everything!". Thus, the organizers decided to emphasize the importance of peace as one of the main values — both for individuals and for society as a whole. In their opinion, it is peace that helps people unite, overcome difficulties, and find mutual understanding.

What the Churches Have Prepared

A rich and diverse program has been prepared for visitors. During the day, many churches will host tours, thematic excursions, as well as exhibitions of painting and photography. In the evening, guests can look forward to concerts featuring choirs, soloists, musicians, and singers.

A special place in the program will be taken by organ music performances and Taizé chants. Additionally, discussions and conversations on relevant topics — oncology, addictions, sustainable family relationships, and personal life experiences — are planned within the chosen theme.

Many churches will also hold traditional services, prayers, and moments of silence for all who wish to participate.

The idea of the Night of Churches came to Latvia from Austria, where a similar ecumenical event among various Christian denominations has been held for over ten years. In Latvia, the project is supported by representatives of most Christian denominations, and it is organized by an interdenominational group of like-minded individuals who created the "Night of Churches Foundation". The event has been held in our country since 2014.

...In the opinion of the editorial team, the Night of Churches has long become not only a religious but also an important cultural event for all of Latvia. Such events help people better understand the history and traditions of the churches, as well as remind them of the value of tranquility, mutual understanding, and human communication in our challenging times.
