Why Do Sloths Often Hang Upside Down?

They relax like this.

In fact, a sloth does not hang upside down, but rather with its back facing down. It may not grasp a branch, but simply hold onto it with its powerful curved claws, which act like hooks.

Sloths spend their entire lives in trees. To rest and sleep in such conditions, they either need to build nests or have anatomical features that prevent them from unclenching their limbs while sleeping and falling. By hanging from a branch, a sloth is in a completely relaxed state, which eliminates the risk of falling. Additionally, in this position, it is less vulnerable to its main enemy — the harpy eagle.

Interestingly, the two-toed sloth can turn its head at an angle of up to 270 degrees. Most mammals have seven cervical vertebrae, while sloths can have eight or even nine.
