Which bird species is best adapted for long migrations?

Little stint.

The little stint breeds in the tundra, ranging from Lapland to Alaska. Some populations migrate from Alaska to New Zealand for the winter. Some flocks travel along the Pacific coast and can make stops to rest, while others cross the ocean non-stop.

Before migration, little stints accumulate fat, which can make up to 55% of their body mass, and shed 'excess' tissues such as the esophageal lining and muscular stomach.

Their unique flying technique allows them to conserve muscle effort; however, it remains a mystery how these birds can go without sleep while in the air for 5 to 9 days.
