Dog trainer Vladimir Golubev discussed whether it is safe to treat dogs with shashlik.
“It’s hard to resist the popular shashlik when outdoors. The enticing aroma will surely attract your dog’s attention, but it’s not advisable to treat her to grilled meat. Otherwise, your picnic may end with a visit to the veterinarian. Even a one-time consumption of shashlik can have serious negative effects on a dog’s health. It’s better to bring along healthy treats to safely delight your pet,” advises Vladimir Golubev.
Dangers of Shashlik
Fried and fatty foods are toxic and dangerous for dogs, explains the expert. Such a delicacy can lead to acute poisoning and digestive problems, as well as cause stomach upset. Additionally, such food can provoke the development of pancreatitis.
Besides the fat content of fried meat, marinades may contain ingredients that are harmful to dogs. Spicy seasonings, as well as garlic and onions, can negatively affect a pet’s sense of smell, cause stomach upset, and lead to anemia. These products remain harmful even after cooking.
What Else Should Not Be Given to Dogs at a Picnic
“Do not feed dogs bones – their shards can damage the intestinal walls and lead to fatal outcomes. Moreover, a dog’s body cannot digest bones whether they are cooked, fried, or baked,” explains the expert.
He also warns against treating dogs with certain fruits. For example, grapes and raisins can provoke acute kidney failure in dogs. “Do not give your pet pomegranate, as the tannins it contains can disrupt the functions of the gastrointestinal organs and cause heart diseases,” warns the dog trainer.
The head of the RKF emphasizes that any sweets are also off-limits for dogs. Chocolate and its derivatives can cause serious harm to an animal’s body, leading to pancreatitis or even hepatitis. “On hot days, it’s not advisable to treat dogs with ice cream, as they lack the enzyme capable of processing lactose found in milk, which can cause gastrointestinal issues,” adds the specialist.
He recommends bringing special treats for dogs. For example, dried or fresh offal. “Cut up some carrots, apples, or simply buy specialized treats at a pet store. Inform everyone that the pet can only be treated with permitted food. This will help you all enjoy your time outdoors and savor delicious food (each their own),” says the dog trainer.
