When can cats and dogs be confiscated in Germany

In the case of repeated violations of animal protection laws or the owner's inability to provide proper conditions for their pets, confiscation of animals with subsequent care in a shelter at the owner's expense is possible in Germany, reports the German publication Deutsch City.

The actions of the authorities depend on the degree of harm caused to the animal. Upon receiving information about a possible violation of animal protection laws, the competent authorities issue an order requiring the situation to be rectified within a specified time frame. However, in some cases, the animal may be confiscated immediately, as reported by the publication.

If the owner ignores the authorities' demands, violates animal protection laws again, or fails to provide proper conditions for their pets, the animals are confiscated and placed in a shelter, where their care is paid for by the owner. The decision to return the animal is made by the relevant authority. In the case of a negative decision, the pet may be kept permanently, and the former owner will be prohibited from acquiring new animals. Confiscated pets may remain in the shelter or be transferred to new owners.

According to the publication, confiscation of dogs in Germany most often occurs due to aggressive behavior, especially after bites. Following a complaint, the animal may be confiscated, and in serious cases, even euthanized. It is worth noting that in most cases, owners have the right to appeal the confiscation decision in court, and such cases usually end in favor of the owner due to errors in the processing of administrative documents.
