To ensure that the transition to a new food is as comfortable as possible for the cat's health, it should be introduced to a variety of foods from an early age. This was reported by veterinarian Anastasia Valeeva.
If a cat has been accustomed to a certain texture, type, or flavor of food since childhood, changing its diet can be quite challenging. The animal does not recognize the existence of other foods apart from what it is used to. What should be done in such a situation?
“From the very beginning, it is important to offer a variety of foods. The cat may choose something new on its own. This usually happens. In the morning, one food, at lunch another, and for dinner a third. Transitioning to a new diet may take time and should not be abrupt. At the same time, the cat should not go hungry for more than 48 hours. It has such physiology. If a pet does not eat for a long time, it can lead to negative processes in the body, disruption of fat metabolism, and the development of liver diseases – lipidosis,” explained the specialist.
Anastasia Valeeva also noted that if a cat approaches the bowl and eats very little, it does not mean that it does not like the food. “Cats can eat up to 20 times a day; this is ingrained in their evolution. They eat often but in small portions. It is completely normal for a cat to approach the feeder, eat a little, and leave. This does not mean that the food does not suit it,” the expert concluded.
