Why Do Cats Love Boxes So Much?

Cats happily climb into boxes or any other confined spaces they encounter. But what lies behind this behavior? Why do they value tightness so much?

In fact, this behavior is driven by a natural desire for comfort. This feeling is especially important in stressful situations, such as when a stray cat first enters a home. In a study published in the journal PLOS One in 2019, Dutch researchers found that the ability to hide plays a key role in reducing stress levels in cats that have just arrived at an animal shelter.

The researchers assessed the stress levels of cats using a non-invasive measure called the Cat-Stress-Score, which is based on the animals' postures, vocal behavior, and activity levels. The scientists also noted that when cats were left without shelter, they would flip their litter boxes over to hide underneath them.

Cats Appreciate More Than Just Three-Dimensional Boxes

Their passion for boxes is not limited to just three-dimensional shapes. In 2021, a study published in the journal Applied Animal Behavior Science examined whether cats would sit inside a Kanizsa contour—a rectangle drawn on the floor.

Unlike a box, the Kanizsa contour has no walls, making it two-dimensional. The study showed that cats indeed feel more comfortable inside such a contour than outside of it. But what benefits does this behavior bring to cats?

One theory is that it helps them avoid dangerous situations. Another possible explanation, which is not scientifically confirmed, is that cats prefer boxes because they provide a convenient place for hunting. After all, as any cat owner can attest, these pets love to hide in boxes, corners, and practically any element of their home environment, including slippers, only to suddenly pounce on an unsuspecting owner.
