Scientists recommend training dogs throughout their lives to prevent dementia

Researchers from the University of Kentucky and the University of California studied changes in the brains of 43 beagles over three years and concluded that regular training improves cognitive functions and prevents the development of dementia in these animals.

Researchers used MRI scanning to analyze changes in the brain structure of dogs. It was found that active engagement with pets contributes to an average increase in their cognitive abilities of 1.74% per year.

The study involved 43 middle-aged beagles. Over three years, they participated in regular activities: training, play, and socializing with other dogs for half an hour daily.

“The analysis showed that the volume of the hippocampus — the area of the brain responsible for cognitive processes — increased in all dogs by an average of 1.74% per year,” the study referenced by the Daily Mail notes.

Researchers emphasize that previous studies observed a decrease in the volume of this brain area in beagles with age. However, the current study found that regular activities contribute to an increase in the hippocampus. This trend was observed in all dogs.

The researchers concluded that engaging with a dog is beneficial even in adulthood.

The results of the study were published in the scientific journal Neuroscience.
