The Dangers of Feeding Dogs Raw Meat: Research Findings

Studies have shown that dogs fed raw meat have antibiotic-resistant bacteria in their bodies.

Recent studies conducted by scientists in the UK warn dog owners about the risks associated with feeding pets raw meat. The data shows that pets receiving such food are more likely to have antibiotic-resistant bacteria in their bodies.

Why Feeding Dogs Raw Meat is Dangerous

In the first study published in 2022, researchers analyzed over 200 puppies that were only 16 weeks old. The researchers established a consistent link between feeding raw meat and the presence of antibiotic-resistant E. coli in the feces of these animals.

In a second, later study, the focus was on the differences between urban and rural dogs. Antibiotic-resistant E. coli was found in the feces of both types of dogs; however, the researchers suggest that in rural dogs, this is linked to the consumption of raw meat.

The genetic strains of antibiotic-resistant E. coli found in rural dogs may be directly related to bacteria found on neighboring farms. In contrast, urban dogs exhibited more diverse genetic variations of this bacteria, which may indicate different sources of contamination, including rivers.

Ultimately, the researchers concluded that feeding dogs raw meat may increase the risk of infection with antibiotic-resistant E. coli. Kristen Reicher, co-author of both studies, noted that the findings should not cause undue concern among pet owners, but rather serve as a reminder of the importance of maintaining hygiene standards when feeding and caring for pets.
