Elephants may once again be housed in the Riga Zoo — this goal was announced by Riga's Vice Mayor Edward Ratnieks. Against the backdrop of plans to merge the zoo with Rīgas meži, the authorities intend to review the long-term development strategy, although previously the concept had already abandoned the exhibition of elephants, opting instead for the white rhinoceros.
Edward Ratnieks emphasized that the zoo lacks a "flagship animal" that would attract more visitors. Therefore, according to him, it is necessary to ensure that large animals can be seen in Riga again.
