The Reaction of Dogs and Cats to a Solar Eclipse

Erika Carmill, a professor of zoology at Indiana University, shares expectations regarding pet behavior during the solar eclipse on April 8, 2024.

In early April, North America will witness a total solar eclipse. Although this phenomenon will not be visible everywhere, it is useful to know how our pets may react during this time!

Carmill suggests that pet owners may notice two main types of behavior (although it is difficult to predict exactly how your pet will behave, as "this is a rare event").

The most likely reaction, according to Carmill, will be "evening behavior." During the total eclipse, animals may start to behave as if evening is approaching, sensing the end of the day. "If you have a dog or cat, they may lie down to sleep, become quieter, or start yawning and stretching," explains Carmill, adding that some dogs may begin to howl at the sudden darkness.

A solar eclipse is "like adding a little piece of night in the middle of the day. So animals may behave as if it is night now."

Carmill also notes that another reaction, which "concerns pet owners more," is that pets may exhibit anxious behavior in response to the solar eclipse. Similar to thunderstorms, visits to the veterinarian, and fireworks, which are common triggers of anxiety in pets, total solar eclipses may be perceived as "strange and unusual" events.

Pet owners should watch for signs of anxiety, such as rapid breathing, scratching, hiding, and pacing. Cats and dogs may also seek comfort from their owners or favorite objects during the total solar eclipse.

How to Prepare Your Pet for the Eclipse

Since pet owners cannot explain to their cats or dogs what is happening during a solar eclipse, Carmill recommends preparing the most comfortable items for your pet in advance of the eclipse.

Additionally, Carmill advises owners to be ready themselves, as many pets look to humans for "cues" when faced with new situations.
