Research has shown that pike have the lowest rate of evolution among jawed vertebrates.
Pike have retained their features as they were one hundred fifty million years ago, during the Jurassic period. This is reported in the journal Evolution, citing research by scientists from China and the United States.
To reach this conclusion, the researchers conducted a computer analysis, studying genetic sequences inherited from common ancestors.
They determined the rate of DNA replacement and mutation over time. As a result, it was established that pike are living fossils. Their evolutionary development is so slow that two species separated by 100 million years of evolution are still capable of interbreeding.
