Mass Poisoning from Turtle Meat Recorded in Tanzania

Eighty-seven people in Tanzania were poisoned by turtle meat. Nine people died, and seventy-eight were hospitalized. This was reported by The Associated Press, citing a statement from local authorities.

According to updated data, among the deceased are eight children. The incident occurred on Pemba Island, which is part of the Zanzibar archipelago. All those affected consumed sea turtle meat.

Local residents consider this dish a delicacy. However, it can be dangerous, as it sometimes leads to food poisoning known as chelonitoxism.

Three years ago, a similar case occurred in Madagascar, where people purchased illegal meat, resulting in the deaths of at least fifteen individuals.
