Who is capable of running on water?

A nimble lizard.

This amazing ability belongs to the Jesus Christ lizard (Basiliscus basiliscus), which inhabits the tropics of America. This fairly large reptile, reaching lengths of up to 80 cm, moves beautifully among the branches of trees, swims excellently, dives, and can even hide at the bottom of a body of water.

However, nature found this insufficient and endowed the lizard with extraordinarily developed hind legs, which allow the basilisk to dash across the surface of the water at speeds of up to 12 km/h. The lizard performs this "trick" to escape from predators or to hunt insects. It presses its front legs against its body and uses its tail as a balancing device and rudder.

The secret of the basilisk's unique abilities lies in the speed at which the reptile strikes the water's surface. The time of push-off from the water's surface is measured in thousandths of a second — during this short interval, the water pockets formed under the lizard's feet behave like a solid body. The basilisk spends a little more time on a full step, making several dozen steps per second.
