There are also physiological reasons. Cats are obligate carnivores: their teeth and jaws are not designed for prolonged chewing of solid food. Older animals or pets with dental and gum issues may find solid pieces uncomfortable, while they can consume the sauce with ease.

An additional factor is the need for moisture. In the wild, cats obtain a significant portion of their fluids from their food. The gravy in the food helps maintain their water balance, so the animal may instinctively choose it. Furthermore, the liquid texture may feel more familiar.

Sometimes it’s about satiety: if the pet is not very hungry, it chooses the most aromatic part and leaves the rest. Cats are also capable of detecting additives in the solid pieces and may refuse them.

However, a constant refusal of the solid part of the diet may signal problems—from gastrointestinal issues to allergic reactions or stress due to changes at home. If this behavior becomes regular, it is better to show the animal to a specialist.
