Veterinarians Explain Why Dogs Get Dandruff

Skin and coat problems can occur not only in street dogs but also in house pets. One such problem is dandruff.

Nutritional Deficiency

If a dog's diet is unbalanced and the body lacks essential vitamins and nutrients, it can negatively affect the condition of the coat. It becomes dull, and the upper layer of the skin begins to die off.

Allergic Reactions

Allergies can occur in response to food proteins, household chemicals, or shampoos. It is usually accompanied by itching, and the dog starts to scratch constantly.

Dry Air

This problem most often manifests in winter when heating appliances dry out the air in rooms. Due to a lack of moisture, the pet's skin may flake, and dandruff easily falls from the coat.

Seasonal Shedding

During shedding, a dog may experience the peeling of epidermal cells. Usually, this problem resolves on its own once the shedding period ends.

Stress or Illness

Often after severe stress, animals start to scratch, leading to skin damage and the formation of dandruff. Skin diseases caused by fungi or mites can also be the cause. Pathogenic microorganisms affect the epithelium, causing it to peel. In some cases, along with dandruff, a dog may lose fur, become restless, and refuse to eat. In such situations, veterinarians recommend seeking help from a specialist.
