Although there may be a desire to treat your dog to something from your table, this should not be done. Food that is healthy for humans can be dangerous for animals. Together with dog trainer Irina Kabytova, we found out which products are strictly prohibited for dogs.
Chocolate
Chocolate contains theobromine and caffeine — substances used in medicine to stimulate heart activity and reduce the tone of smooth muscles. However, dogs are unable to effectively metabolize these components, as their bodies lack the necessary enzymes.
“Consumption of chocolate can lead to vomiting, diarrhea, and dehydration. If help is not provided in time, serious complications may develop: seizures, internal bleeding. In some cases, this can result in death,” warns Irina Kabytova.
Grapes
Consumption of grapes or raisins can cause kidney failure, which in turn can lead to the death of the animal. This is because grapes contain monosaccharides and tannins that the dog's body cannot metabolize, thus acting as toxins. It is important to completely exclude this product from the diet, even in small amounts. According to experts, for a dog weighing 8 kg, 4–5 grapes can be fatal.
Onions
The dog trainer emphasizes: “Onions are dangerous for your pet in any form, including leaves, juice, and dry seasonings such as onion powder.”
Onions contain N-propyl disulfide, which damages the dog's red blood cells, reducing their ability to carry oxygen, which can lead to anemia. The animal becomes lethargic, refuses to eat, and may lose consciousness. In severe cases, a blood transfusion is required. Garlic has a similar effect, so it should also be excluded from the diet.
Avocado
All parts of the avocado, including the fruit, seeds, and leaves, contain persin. Irina Kabytova explains that “persin is toxic to animals. It can cause fluid accumulation in the lungs and chest, leading to breathing problems and oxygen deprivation.”
Coffee and Tea
Coffee and tea pose a danger to animals due to their caffeine content. Caffeine stimulates the dog's nervous system, which can cause hyperactivity, diarrhea, vomiting, increased heart rate, seizures, and tremors. Excessive caffeine can lead to arrhythmia and respiratory failure.
“Dogs are strictly prohibited from being given any caffeinated drinks. It is found in some energy drinks and sodas. Keep even coffee grounds and used tea bags away from the animal, and store coffee and tea in a place inaccessible to the pet, such as a closed cabinet,” advises the expert.
Raw Potatoes
Feeding dogs raw potatoes is not allowed — the tubers contain harmful solanine, the level of which decreases with heat treatment.
The ban applies to raw root vegetables, while boiled or baked potatoes can be given in moderation. Potatoes can be offered to dogs occasionally and in small portions as a treat, rather than as a main food, notes the dog trainer. Excess carbohydrates in potatoes can lead to weight gain. If you want to treat your pet, offer a piece of apple, carrot sticks, or fresh or frozen peas, but not canned ones.
Alcohol
The dog trainer warns that even a small dose of alcohol can cause ethanol poisoning. The main symptoms include loss of coordination, lethargy, seizures, diarrhea, and vomiting. A large dose of alcohol can lead to a heart attack, coma, and even death. Keep alcoholic beverages, as well as perfumes and cleaning products containing alcohol, away from the dog.
