Why do lizards and snakes sometimes stick out their tongues?

They explore the surrounding air.

In these animals, the tongue is an organ of chemical perception, combining the functions of taste and additional smell. By sticking out their tongues, reptiles “smell” and “taste” the air. This allows them to better navigate their surroundings, find prey or a mate.
