Where Did the Name of the Squirrel Come From?

Related to the monetary unit, for which the pelts of squirrels were used.

This curious and active rodent, with fur of reddish or ash-black shades, was once called a veveritsa or veksha.

The modern name originated from the changeable coin "bela," as the pelts of these animals were used as currency. "Animal" or, as they were also called, "fur" money, began to be used in trade since ancient times. Despite the small size of a squirrel's pelt (the weight of the animal itself is about 250 grams), its fur has always been in high demand.
