Among primates, there is only one venomous species — and it looks quite cute

The slow loris is a unique and the only venomous mammal among primates, possessing a complex defense mechanism.

The gland on its shoulder secretes an oily substance that, when mixed with saliva, turns into a potent venom delivered through specialized grooves on its fangs.

This toxin is used not only against predators but also in intraspecies competition, which is an extremely rare phenomenon in the animal world. A loris bite, capable of breaking bone, causes excruciating pain, leaves long-healing wounds, and can lead to life-threatening anaphylactic shock.

Despite their charming appearance, which often makes slow lorises victims of the illegal exotic pet trade, they remain dangerous wild predators. Keeping them in captivity is not only illegal but also deadly, as documented cases of severe allergic reactions in owners confirm.
