These Birds Really Can Predict the Weather

Popular folklore claiming that animals like groundhogs or woolly bear caterpillars can predict the weather lacks scientific basis — the accuracy of such "forecasts" is extremely low.

However, some birds demonstrate astonishing abilities to sense natural disasters. For example, in 2014, scientists recorded how golden-crowned kinglets left their nests in Tennessee (USA) two days before a devastating storm with 84 tornadoes. Experts believe that these birds may have been able to detect infrasound generated by the approaching storm system.

An even more impressive example is the North American brown-headed cowbird, whose mating behavior correlates with the intensity of the upcoming Atlantic hurricane season. Ornithologists found that in years with mild hurricane seasons, the breeding period for these birds is longer, while in years with powerful hurricanes, it is shorter. Moreover, this correlation, observed as early as May–June, can sometimes be even more reliable than early weather forecasts.

Although the exact mechanism of this ability remains a mystery, it is clear that evolution has equipped birds with subtle tools for survival, allowing them to "read" natural signals that are inaccessible to human perception.
