Can Fish Swim Backwards?

Some of them can.

The structure of fish tails allows them to move only forward, and they are capable of only slight retreat using their pectoral fins. However, members of the family Tetraodontidae, such as pufferfish and fugu, demonstrate remarkable agility by swimming tail-first.

These species inhabit areas with rocky or stony bottoms, where there are many cracks and crevices. Their high maneuverability enables them to quickly turn around while chasing small prey or picking up fallen food pieces in narrow gaps.
