A wet and cold nose is not a reliable indicator of an animal's health, and it is not the best way to determine if your pet is sick. Many people check an animal's condition by its nose, as dryness on hot days may indicate a lack of water. Animal noses can also dry out during sleep. In winter, when the air becomes less humid both indoors and outdoors, pets' noses can also become dry. Veterinarians assert that there is nothing dangerous about this. It is only important that cats and dogs always have access to fresh drinking water. However, the 'secret' of moisture is not just about that.
The tip of a dog's or cat's nose is called the rhinarium. It is bare skin that contains numerous glands that secrete mucus. This helps animals differentiate smells. When volatile molecules hit the wet surface, they move at different speeds, allowing pets to separate them from one another and better identify scents.
Recent studies have shown that a nose temperature five degrees lower than the surrounding environment is necessary for animals to perceive smells more accurately and detect heat emanating from a potential prey or opponent.
A wet nose also helps determine the direction of the wind. For a hunter, this is a critically important skill, as by sensing their prey, a cat or dog understands from which direction the wind carries the scent.
