In Philadelphia (USA), a four-year-old husky named Kobi prevented a possible explosion by detecting a gas leak in his neighborhood. The dog's owner shared a video with details on social media.
Shanell Bell, a resident of Philadelphia, noticed that her dog was persistently "digging" at the concrete surface in the yard every day. This behavior seemed unusual to her and raised concerns.
Considering that there had been a small accident in her home a few weeks ago, Shanell decided to check the area with a portable detector and discovered a gas leak. It took the repair crew three days to fix the damage identified by the dog, The Guardian reports. Specialists noted that the concentration of gas was so high that simply turning on a light switch could have led to an explosion of the entire house.
Experts explained that dogs are capable of detecting gas leaks due to the strong smell of mercaptans, which resembles the odor of rotten eggs. Gas companies add this component to natural gas, which is colorless and odorless, to ensure its safe use in homes and businesses.
After the video was published, Kobi became a real star among social media users. At the request of fans, the husky's owner released a children's book titled "The Dog That Saved the Neighborhood Before Christmas."
