Cynologist Vladimir Golubev spoke about dog breeds with a high level of intelligence.
Dogs perceive human speech not just as a set of sounds, but with a certain meaning. Their “vocabulary” increases throughout their lives. On average, a dog can remember about 100 words, although some pets with exceptional abilities can remember even more. Of course, abstract meanings of words remain inaccessible to animals; however, they understand commands and names of objects.
According to neuropsychologist Stanley Coren, who studied the cognitive abilities of dogs, in terms of social development, these animals approach the level of an average three-year-old child. A trained dog can remember more than 200 words, as the scientist states in his research.
However, when it comes to canine intelligence, much depends on various factors. For example, a dog that lives on a chain and a pet that resides in an apartment and interacts constantly with family members will have different “vocabularies.”
Breed also plays an important role. As a result of tests, scientists identified several of the smartest breeds. The top three include the Border Collie, German Shepherd, and Poodle. They are followed by the Doberman, Golden Retriever, Sheltie, and Labrador.
