The Animal of the Year 2024 Has Been Chosen in Latvia

The roe deer has been named the Animal of the Year 2024 by the Latvian National Museum of Nature — it is the smallest and most common representative of the deer family in the country.

Since 2000, the Latvian National Museum of Nature has been determining the Animal of the Year, aiming to raise awareness about protected species in Latvia. Over time, the list of Animals of the Year has included more common species, primarily mammals, as the museum's daily activities have shown that people lack knowledge about them as well.

Roe deer inhabit the entire territory of Latvia. These animals occupy specific areas, preferring to live alone or in small groups. The lifespan of roe deer ranges from 7 to 12 years. They are a target for hunting and play an important role in the ecosystem, forming a significant food base for predators.
