The Origin of Species: Did Cats and Dogs Have a Common Ancestor

All living beings on Earth indeed had a common ancestor. This also applies to terrestrial mammalian predators.

One possible ancestor of cats and dogs is Dormaalocyon latouri, which lived about 55 million years ago. This small creature weighed no more than one kilogram and fed on insects and small mammals.

The remains of this creature, which primarily spent its time in trees, were found in Belgium. Its arboreal lifestyle is confirmed by the structure of its ankles. It is known that mammals descended from therapsids, which shrank in size during the age of dinosaurs and primarily led a burrowing lifestyle.

Over time, they began to increase in size and gave rise to giants such as whales, elephants, and lions.
