There are several such species.
The oldest groups of fish include cartilaginous species, such as sharks, rays, and chimeras. These cartilaginous creatures existed on Earth 450–420 million years ago, and sharks similar to modern ones appeared about 350 million years ago.
Among bony fish, the most ancient are the lobe-finned and lungfish. Both groups emerged approximately 400–380 million years ago.
In the modern fauna, lobe-finned fish are represented by the single genus Latimeria, which includes two species found in the Indian Ocean. Lungfish comprise six species that inhabit freshwater bodies in Australia, Africa, and South America.
