Eating snow can cause digestive upset in dogs due to the presence of harmful substances, specialists warned.
“In winter, dog owners often visit veterinary clinics in our region with complaints about sudden symptoms of digestive upset in their pets. It usually turns out that these dogs have been eating snow during walks,” shared veterinary specialists.
Experts clarified: snow poses a danger as it accumulates reagents used for treating roads and streets. Additionally, various harmful substances, such as car exhaust and emissions from industrial enterprises, settle on the snow. “When ingested by an animal, snow can provoke digestive upset,” added the veterinary specialists. Sometimes the symptoms resolve on their own, but in some cases, timely veterinary assistance is necessary, noted the experts.
“Another threat is the possibility that a dog may bite or swallow foreign objects, such as sticks, stones, or trash, which may be hidden under the snow,” specialists pointed out.
In conclusion, experts advise against allowing pets to eat snow, especially in urban environments and near roads.
