Where Did Ponies Come From?

They were domesticated independently from regular horses.

Ponies are a general name for various breeds of small horses that do not have a single origin.

They are believed to be descendants of wild horses that inhabit islands. In such areas, there are usually no large predators, so hoofed animals do not need to flee. As a result, they become smaller, and their legs become shorter.

Most ponies not only have short limbs but also exhibit increased coarseness of coat, as they originate from temperate islands where strong winds often blow.
