The cat should fit entirely in the litter box, have the ability to turn around and dig a hole. If the litter box does not suit the pet in size or shape, it may lead to cleanliness issues. This was reported by veterinarian Edward Wolf.
“Pet owners often approach veterinarians with questions about their cats' uncleanliness. The reasons are not always related to diseases. Sometimes it’s simply that the litter box is not suitable for the cat,” notes the veterinarian.
The size of the litter box should be optimal: it should not be too large or too small. The cat should be able to fit entirely in it, even if it does not always enter completely. It is important for the pet to have the opportunity to enter the litter box, turn around, dig a hole, relieve itself, and cover it up. “This significantly reduces the likelihood that the cat will relieve itself in inappropriate places,” emphasizes the veterinarian.
The litter box should be placed in a quiet and secluded area so that neither people nor other animals disturb the cat.
The expert added that there is an unwritten rule: there should be one litter box for each cat plus one additional one. “Ideally, it is necessary to have two litter boxes for one cat,” specified the veterinarian.
Speaking about creating a safe and comfortable environment for the cat, the expert emphasized the choice of a scratching post. It is extremely important for cats to sharpen their claws, notes the veterinarian. This process allows them to mark their territory, relieve tension, and stretch after sleeping. When choosing a scratching post, the owner should pay attention to its stability, advises Edward Wolf. There is a risk that the cat may start scratching, and the structure could fall on it. In such a case, the animal may have a negative experience, and next time it might avoid that scratching post, preferring to scratch the sofa, for example.
The speaker also noted that cats live in a three-dimensional space. “They do not just move on the floor; they are constantly jumping and climbing to heights, so these features should be taken into account when arranging their space,” emphasizes the expert.
In the room where the cat lives, it is necessary to create a lookout point. It should be elevated and provide a wide view. It is important for the cat to be able to see all the “strategic objects”: the front door, its bowl, or litter box, if they are in the same room.
“It is important for a cat to feel safe, to control the surrounding space, and to see everything. Therefore, they often choose high places for resting – cabinets, tables, refrigerators. Some cats even climb onto ledges from where they can observe their ‘possessions’,” says Edward Wolf.
It is important to remember: if the cat is in its place, it should not be disturbed. “You cannot just approach and pick it up. If you want to interact with the cat while it is dozing, first call it, let it know you are nearby and want attention. If the cat continues to sleep soundly, do not disturb it,” says Edward Wolf, reminding that cats choose the time and duration of interaction themselves.
