The European consumer organization Foodwatch insists on banning the tethering of dairy cattle on farms, claiming that this method is inhumane and causes suffering to animals. This is stated in a publication on the organization's official website.
According to Foodwatch, currently more than one million head of cattle are tethered on 28,000 farms in Germany. In 2021, a decision was made in the country to introduce a ban on “the tethering of dairy cattle for 10 years.” However, the organization claims that the relevant bill presented by the German Ministry of Agriculture has “stalled at the voting stage in the cabinet.”
After the publication of the first draft law, many farmers in Germany opposed its implementation, as more than 30% of cows in Bavaria are tethered year-round.
Animal welfare organizations state their intention to achieve a complete ban on this method of cattle keeping. In their opinion, a possible compromise where animals would be tethered only during the winter period violates animal protection laws, as it hinders the natural behavior of cows. Foodwatch also refers to veterinary studies showing that dairy cows kept on tether often suffer from painful udder infections.
