The United Nations has declared 2024 as the International Year of Camels, as reported by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO).
“The main goal of the International Year of Camels – 2024 is to raise awareness of the untapped potential of camels and to call for increased investment in camel husbandry, as well as to promote the expansion of research, development of capacity, and implementation of innovative methods and technologies,” the organization noted.
Camels are a key source of livelihood for millions of households in challenging conditions across more than 90 countries, especially for indigenous peoples and local communities.
The camel family, which includes various species from alpacas to Bactrian and dromedary camels, guanacos, llamas, and vicuñas, contributes to food security, improved nutrition, and economic growth, and holds significant cultural and social importance for many communities around the world, emphasizes the FAO.
