The share of treats should not exceed 10–15% of the daily caloric intake of a cat. This was reported by PhD in Biological Sciences Maria Yatsyshina.
“Often, owners do not pay enough attention to treats. They think that if they feed commercial food, everything is fine. And if they give a piece of cheese or a raw egg, it’s not a big deal,” shares the expert’s opinion.
The specialist noted that a medium-sized cat (weighing about 4 kg) requires 160–170 kilocalories per day. “For example, 10 grams of cheese contains 40 kilocalories. Thus, if we give the cat a portion of food and add a small piece of cheese, it receives ¼ of additional calories,” explained the biologist.
Maria Yatsyshina emphasizes: if the owner wants to please their cat, they should use special treats. “Do not give what you eat yourself. Treats should make up 10–15% of the daily caloric intake. If you give more, then you need to reduce the amount of main food,” specified the expert.
Otherwise, the cat may face the risk of obesity.
