Feeding a cat once a day is unacceptable. These animals can have up to 20 meals a day, including at night. Veterinarian Edward Wolf shared insights on cat care.
The veterinarian explained that cats prefer to eat small portions throughout the day. This is due to their biological characteristics. “Wild cats are constantly hunting. This eating habit has been preserved in domestic animals. A cat can have up to 20 meals a day, and they even eat at night. Therefore, it is recommended to leave food available at all times or to feed the pet small portions throughout the day. Automatic feeders can help with this,” noted the specialist. He emphasizes that feeding a cat once a day is incorrect.
Additionally, food and water bowls should not be placed next to each other. “This is related to historical habits: a cat would first hunt and then find a water source to drink,” explains the veterinarian.
He also points out that cats can be picky about the material of their bowls. “Some of them do not drink from plastic bowls, as they may not like the smell of plastic. Cats are more sensitive. It is better to choose bowls made of ceramic or glass. For some cats, it is important that their whiskers touch the water, so a flatter and wider bowl would be suitable,” added the speaker.
The expert reminds that the water for the cat should be changed daily, and it is advisable to provide several water points in the apartment. “Some cats prefer to drink from the tap. They tend to drink running water, as it seems fresher. Drinking fountains are suitable for such pets,” clarifies the veterinarian.
He also emphasizes that maintaining hydration is extremely important for cats. “If a cat receives enough liquid from an early age, it reduces the risk of developing urinary system diseases,” explains the expert.
Scratching posts are an important element in the lives of cats. They can be vertical or horizontal, as long as they are stable.
The speaker elaborated on the issue of choosing a cat litter box. “The main problem that cat owners consult zoopsychologists and veterinarians about is the cleanliness of the animals. This may be related to the cat not liking its litter box. It is necessary to have several options. The litter box should be suitable for the cat's size. For example, a small kitten would need a small litter box with low sides. When the pet grows, it can be transitioned to a larger box. A kitten will not be able to climb into a box with 30 cm high sides, and it may relieve itself elsewhere,” explained the veterinarian.
He noted that the cat should fit completely in the litter box. “It is important for a cat to be able to get into the box, turn around, dig a hole, and so on,” added the speaker.
The litter box should be placed in a quiet location. It should be cleaned daily, preferably after each use. “Do not place the litter box in a hallway or a high-traffic area,” noted the specialist.
The expert emphasized an unspoken rule: one cat – one litter box plus one. “Ideally, one cat should have two litter boxes,” clarifies the veterinarian.
Additionally, the cat should have its own space in the house where it will not be disturbed.
