There are numerous documented cases of dolphins attacking humans, biting them, striking them with their beaks, or even attempting to hold them underwater. The victims sustained serious injuries and required hospitalization. There is one known case where a person died; however, the victim was under the influence of alcohol and was behaving inappropriately.

The reasons for such attacks remain unclear, but they are never associated with attempts to eat a human. Most likely, this is an expression of their playful behavior.

Dolphins enjoy playing with floating objects and with animals that are less mobile, such as seals and sea turtles. Sometimes, humans become their toys. Dolphins do not realize how dangerous their actions can be for a person.
